If you hold too far from the head of the hammer you have a greater rotational inertia associated with the hammer but you also then need to apply a greater moment to achieve the same angular velocity (and thus velocity) as if you held the hammer very near the head.

Grip the very end of the hammer with both hands so as to get the most centrifugal force and swing it completely over your head, using your arcing back to add power.|||LOL.
