How to use wood stain on a swing?

There is a large wooden stationary swing in the backyard of my new house. Its sturdy (I sat on it and I'm 6'2 230 lbs.) but the wood is very dry and rough. Can I use some stain on it and save it?|||Min wax Poly Shades makes stains that have the stain and finish all in one. Nothing easier. I sold a lot of it at home depot. Make sure you use the exterior. Use a brush or cup sprayer.|||Depending on the wood I would sand and treat with Blackfriar Danish oil. This will give the wood some nourishment before you stain and varnish.
